DESCRIPTION:In PlayLab\, young participants become sound scientists as they create simple DIY instruments like shakers and “sound sandwiches” using everyday materials. \nThrough play and experimentation\, kids explore ideas like vibration\, rhythm\, and volume while turning ordinary materials into instruments they can use right away. \nDesigned for ages 5-9\, DIY Sound Factory is all about curiosity\, creativity\, and discovering how music can be made from almost anything. \nAbout PlayLabPlayLab is a hands-on sound playground where young visitors can discover how music works. With interactive stations that feature strings\, wind\, percussion\, and electronic instruments\, kids experiment with the building blocks of sound—pitch\, volume\, timbre\, and vibration. Pluck a string\, strike a drum\, blow into an organ\, or shape sound on a synth to hear how instruments create their unique voices. Designed for curiosity and creativity\, PlayLab encourages visitors to listen closely\, explore freely\, and learn how musicians turn sound into music.

SUMMARY:Liner Notes: Inside the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio — 'Machine Head'
DESCRIPTION:Liner Notes: Inside the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio is part storytelling tour\, part listening session\, exploring the legendary albums recorded in the “Sistine Chapel of rock ‘n’ roll.” Step back in time and experience Machine Head as it was recorded through the RSM. \nConceived by Rolling Stones tour manager Ian Stewart and built in 1968\, the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio (RSM) helped redefine how—and where—albums could be made. For this session\, we turn to Machine Head by Deep Purple\, a landmark album born out of disruption\, famously recorded in Montreux after a fire at the casino forced the band to improvise its recording setup. That moment of chaos became legend in “Smoke on the Water\,” which directly references the Mobile Studio parked outside the burning venue and the band capturing ideas in real time as the scene unfolded. Across the record\, that intensity does not let up\, from the unstoppable momentum of “Highway Star” through to the explosive\, sprawling charge of “Space Truckin’.” It is a band completely dialed in\, pushing volume\, precision\, and urgency right to the edge.

SUMMARY:NMC Presents: Eddy Fest
DESCRIPTION:In honour of the King Eddy’s 120th anniversary\, NMC presents Eddy Fest\, a three-day music festival from August 14-16\, celebrating every chapter of the venue’s history. \nEddy Fest showcases an eclectic mix of performances that represent the venue’s past and present — from blues and rock to country and singer-songwriters! \nThe King Eddy has lived many lives over of its 120-year existence. Built between 1905 and 1907 as the King Edward Hotel on 9 Avenue SE (then known as “Whiskey Row”)\, it provided a home away from home for settlers\, railway workers\, travellers\, and people from all walks of life. Decades later\, it became an important part of the city’s music scene during its heyday as “Calgary’s Home of the Blues” from the early 1980s until it closed in 2004. That rich civic and musical history is the primary reason that the National Music Centre worked to save the King Eddy and build its new home around the venue. When the reimagined King Eddy reopened in 2018\, it did so with a mandate to continue offering a welcoming space for legendary live music — “all music for all people.” Now\, the Eddy celebrates its 120th anniversary alongside the 10th birthday of NMC’s home\, Studio Bell\, remaining an important piece of Calgary’s music story and one of the oldest music venues in Canada that is still in operation today. \nEddy Fest Lineup\nFriday Night (August 14)\n7:30 pm – Duke Domino\n8:30 pm – Ollee Owens Band\n9:30 pm – Brother Bicker Band \n Saturday Brunch (August 15)\n11:30 am – Jessie Bird\n12:30 pm – Ross Fizzard \nSaturday Afternoon (August 15)\n1:30 pm – Ashley Ghostkeeper\n2:30 pm – Take the Sonset\n3:30 pm – Leo Martinez\n4:30 pm – John Rutherford \nSaturday Evening (August 15)\n7:30 pm – Sonia Deleo & The New Dads\n8:30 pm – Deicha & The VuDudes\n9:30 pm – Jade Elephant \nSunday Brunch (August 16)\n11:30 am – Lewis Cardinal\n12:30 pm – Toni Vere \nSunday Afternoon (August 16)\n1:30 pm – Black Crow Funk\n2:30 pm – Marcus Trummer
