SUMMARY:Walk for Reconciliation 2026
DESCRIPTION:Walk for Reconciliation 2026Event Date: National Indigenous Peoples Day \nSunday\, June 21\, 2026\nEvent Time: 8:30 am – 1 pm\nCost: Free Ages: All Ages\nWe invite the community to participate in the 17th annual Walk for Reconciliation this National Indigenous Peoples Day. The walk starts at Harry Hays Building (220 4 Ave SE) and concludes at The Confluence (750 9th Ave SE).The Walk for Reconciliation is a day to reflect on the difficult history of this land and honour the survivors\, and the children who never returned home. It’s a day to recognize the inter-generational impacts of residential schools on individuals\, families\, and communities. Held on National Indigenous Peoples Day\, it is also a celebration of the vibrant and lively Indigenous communities and cultures that still exist today. \n\nEvent Details:8:30 am: Gathering at Harry Hays Building | 220 4 Ave SE9 am: Start walk at Harry Hays Building | 220 4 Ave SE10 am: Walk ends at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland | 750 9th Ave SEA free community meal and coffee courtesy of Tim Hortons East Village will be available for the first 500 participants.10:15 am: Outdoor gathering with speeches\, truth telling from residential school survivors\, and performances by drummers and dancers.11 am – 1 pm: Community programming\, including learnings from a Treaty 7 Elder\, Indigenous games\, free admission to The Confluence Cultural Centre and activations at Calgary’s oldest building\, Hunt House. \nThank you to our partners for supporting this event and making this gathering possible: Trellis Society\, Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary\, and Bow Valley College. Thank you to The City of Calgary at the Team at Tim Hortons East Village for supporting the walk. Why We WalkFrom 1883 to 1996\, upwards of 150\,000 children were put through the federal residential school system in Canada. First Nations\, Métis and Inuit children were removed from their homes and families and underwent a violent removal of their identities and culture.Children who attended these schools were subjected to all forms of abuse\, and there were many children who never returned home. As determined by the Canadian House of Commons in October 2022\, these church-run and federally funded schools were an attempted genocide of Indigenous Peoples to gain control of land and resources. On June 11\, 2008\, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered a full apology on behalf of Canadians for the Indian Residential School System. After decades of this violence and loss being minimized\, unacknowledged or outright denied\, this apology was a monumental step towards truth. The Walk for Reconciliation is a day to reflect on the difficult history of this land and honour the survivors\, and the children who never returned home. It’s a day to recognize the inter-generational impacts of residential schools on individuals\, families\, and communities. Held on National Indigenous Peoples Day\, it is also a celebration of the vibrant and lively Indigenous communities and cultures that still exist today.

SUMMARY:OHSOTO’KINO: Indigenous Peoples Day at Studio Bell
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with free admission at Studio Bell\, home of the National Music Centre. \nThe day will feature live performances from award-winning throat-singing duo Tudjaat from Nunavut\, a DJ set by sean beaver\, and more acts to be announced. \nVisitors can also explore the annually updated Speak Up! exhibit\, showcasing the stories of five newly added Indigenous musicians\, and a vendor market on the main floor with local Indigenous artisans. Indigenous Peoples Day is presented as part of NMC’s OHSOTO’KINO initiative. \n— \n10 am to 5 pm \nAdmission to Studio Bell is free for everyone on June 21. \n— \nAbout Tudjaat: \nTudjaat are Madeleine Allakariallak and Phoebe Atagotaaluk\, two Inuit women from Nunavut\, Canada who are keeping the ancient tradition of Inuit throat singing alive. Tudjaat got its start when Madelaine\, who performed as part of a backup chorus with Susan Aglukark’s third album\, was noticed by its producer\, Randall Prescott. When he learned that she had a cousin who was also a throat singer\, he arranged to have them brought together for a recording session which combined their traditional singing and modern music. The project featured “Kajusita (When My Ship Comes In)\,” a song which won its producer the 1997 American Indian Film Institute Awards Best Song award\, was included on a United Nations compilation CD\, and was made into a music video. The song\, which describes the forced exile of a group of Inuit to the High Arctic in the last century\, is a painful and poignant tribute to those who suffered and died as a consequence of a questionable government decision. \nAbout sean beaver: \nsean beaver is a multi-award-winning Indigenous techno/electronic artist based in Calgary\, Alberta\, originally from Driftpile Cree Nation in Treaty 8 Territory\, and is currently nominated for two YYC Music Awards: Indigenous Artist of the Year and World/Cultural Recording of the Year. Known for his high-energy hybrid performances that blend live looping\, original electronic production\, Pow Wow elements\, percussion\, and vocal chants\, his sound has been compared to a fusion of The Chemical Brothers and Richie Hawtin. Deeply connected to his Indigenous heritage and sober since 2006\, sean was also a founding member of the pioneering Indigenous hip-hop group REDDNATION from 2002–2013 before returning to his electronic roots as a solo artist. Since then\, he has independently released several albums\, including his 2024 release The Temperance. A self-taught producer and performer with a background in radio broadcasting\, sean combines years of experimentation\, technical skill\, and creative evolution into his music and live shows. His latest single\, “I’m Ok\,” is out now. \nAbout OHSOTO’KINO: \nOHSOTO’KINO is a Blackfoot phrase meaning ‘to recognize a voice of.’ This Indigenous programming initiative focuses on three elements: creation of new music in NMC’s recording studios\, artist development through a music incubator program\, and exhibitions via the annually updated Speak Up! gallery. With support from TD\, NMC is creating more opportunities for Indigenous artists to produce new music and develop their skills\, and continuing to amplify the stories of Indigenous musicians and their contributions to Canadian culture. NMC’s National Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee leads the direction of the initiative designed to forge stronger bridges of understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. \nAbout Speak Up! \nWith the support of TD Bank Group\, the award-winning Speak Up! exhibit showcases trailblazing Indigenous artists who have made a lasting impact on culture through music. Through storytelling\, immersive audio\, and personal artifacts\, Speak Up! invites visitors to explore how these artists are using their voices to spark dialogue\, inspire change\, and share what it means to be First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit in Canada. Stay tuned for the latest additions for 2026. \n— \nNational Indigenous Peoples Day at Studio Bell is made possible with support from TD and the City of Calgary. \nLearn more: studiobell.ca/whats-on

SUMMARY:PlayLab: Feet to the Beat
DESCRIPTION:Turn up the music and shake it out! Join us in PlayLab where we’ll be moving and grooving to a new style of dance each session. \n— \n11:00 am and 1:00 pm \nFree admission on Level 1 \n— \nAbout Kym Butler: \nKym has been a dance educator/movement instructor for almost 40 years. If it involves moving the body\, then she has facilitated the body moving. She has worked with figure skaters\, gymnasts\, models\, musicians and\, of course\, dancers. Kym has choreographed for music videos\, television commercials\, award ceremonies\, concert dance\, drag pageants\, parades and flash mobs. There is no age or skill limit in Kym’s classes\, she can teach any beginner and refine the seasoned artist. Her sessions are welcoming\, inclusive and most importantly\, fun! \n— \nAbout PlayLab: \nPlayLab is a hands-on sound playground where young visitors can discover how music works. With interactive stations that feature strings\, wind\, percussion\, and electronic instruments\, kids experiment with the building blocks of sound—pitch\, volume\, timbre\, and vibration. Pluck a string\, strike a drum\, blow into an organ\, or shape sound on a synth to hear how instruments create their unique voices. Designed for curiosity and creativity\, PlayLab encourages visitors to listen closely\, explore freely\, and learn how musicians turn sound into music. \nPlayLab is open to the public with free admission on Level 1 of Studio Bell every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Learn more at studiobell.ca/exhibitions/playlab. \nPlayLab is made possible with support from the Alberta Museums Association and the Radomski Foundation.
