SUMMARY:The Harpoonist\, Morgen Le Fae and Factory Walk
DESCRIPTION:Where: Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club\n109 7 Avenue S.W Calgary\n18+ with government issued identification\nWhen: Thursday July 16\, 2026\nDoors: 7:00pm-8:00pm\nAdmission: $16.00  \n\nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!\n\nThe Harpoonist\nYou ought to meet Harpoonist. Known to family\, friends and hardcore fans as Shawn Hall. A harpoon/harmonica/harp virtuoso with a couple of decades in the hardcore\, blues-based rock and roll trenches. D’you remember The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer\, Shawn’s duo with Matt Rogers for 17 blistering years at festivals and concert halls and clubs large and small\, grungy and almost clean?\n\nWell\, Hall’s turned a new leaf. Harpoonist — Hall’s non-de-plume and the name of the band — is something else again. New songs. New record. New gritty\, tough-assed swamp music with edge and off-the-wall lyrics. More importantly\, new musical partner-in-crime Big Sugar’s Gordie Johnson. Harpoonist (the band) is something else: Hall on harpoon\, and vocals of course\, and some keys. And Johnson\, Big Sugar’s Texas-based producer\, guitarist on nearly everything else. Plus\, Hall’s pal Jonas Shandel\, who also helped write the songs.\n\nHarpoonist is ready. There’s a new track ready to be released called “Good People” The made-in-Texas record is titled “Did We Come Here to Dance.” Due in February on Tonic Records label and on all the streaming services.\n\nOh\, and you almost certainly will dance. Promise.

SUMMARY:How the West Got Shirtless: Beefcakes\, the Stampede\, and Queerness with Kevin Allen
DESCRIPTION:Event Date: Thursday\, July 16\nEvent Time: 7-8:30 pm | Doors open 6:30 pm\nCost: $15 (plus fees)\nAges: 13+\n\nLast year\, Kevin Allen packed the house with Colonial Calgary Was SO Gay. This year\, he’s back — and somehow\, things are getting even beefier.\n\nFor one special summer edition\, Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History becomes Hot Cakes & Hot Takes on History. Diving into a surprising chapter of Calgary’s visual history\, we ask a very important question — just how much shirtless cowboy photography can one city produce before people start asking questions?\n\nHistorian and author Kevin Allen returns to explore the world of “beefcake” imagery that flourished around the Calgary Stampede throughout the twentieth century. Originally created to celebrate rugged masculinity\, athleticism\, and the ideal western man\, these photographs often featured remarkably sculpted cowboys\, ranch hands\, and athletes posing in various states of undress.\n\nThe intention may have been to promote strength\, virility\, and frontier values. The result\, however\, was often something a little more… complicated.\n\nKevin examines photographs\, advertisements\, postcards\, and popular culture\, and how these images reflect changing ideas about gender\, masculinity\, and desire. Along the way\, he’ll explore how queer audiences found meaning in images that were never intended for them\, and why some of Calgary’s most iconic symbols of masculinity have aged into something unexpectedly homoerotic.\n\nThis conversation is a reminder that history is rarely as straightforward as it appears — and that sometimes the most revealing stories are hidden in plain sight\, usually without a shirt.\n\nCome for the hot cakes\, stay for the realization that Calgary has been accidentally serving queer subtext for decades.

SUMMARY:Chandler Billinghurst
DESCRIPTION:Chandler Billinghurst is a comedian with the kind of name that sounds like he should either own a vineyard or get heckled at one. He brings sharp observations\, quick turns\, and just enough charm to make terrible life choices seem relatable. On stage\, Chandler mixes wit and honesty\, finding the funny in everyday chaos\, awkward moments\, and the general confusion of being alive. He’s proof that sometimes the best way to survive adulthood is to laugh at it first. \nOn stage\, Chandler mixes wit and honesty\, finding the funny in everyday chaos\, awkward moments\, and the general confusion of being alive. SUMMARY:A Long Dramatic Pause
DESCRIPTION:A Long Dramatic Pause is a live performance that explores strategies of resistance against ultranationalism and far-right politics through the languages of photography and theatre. Performed by Cindy Ansah and co-developed with artist Erdem Taşdelen\, the narrative comprises twelve dramatic scenes that describe a photographic image\, never showing it directly but rather bringing it to life through re-enactment and visual analysis. \nAt the heart of the photograph being described is a young woman\, a figure of solidarity and defiance with whom the audience can identify. As the performer moves between observing and embodying this antifascist figure\, the narrative gradually implicates the audience as if they had been unknowing protagonists in the image all along. With this\, their focus shifts away from the performer towards their own agency and collective presence. \nA Long Dramatic Pause is a process-based project developed anew with each staging. Every version emerges from a collaboration between the artist and a new performer\, guided by a set of graphic scores created specifically for the work. \nThe first staging of A Long Dramatic Pause took place in London (UK) in September 2025. This second staging at Contemporary Calgary marks the performance’s Canadian premiere. \nFree with registration.

SUMMARY:Current // Process + Place
DESCRIPTION:Current is a new series of public art activations presented by The New Gallery (TNG)\, transforming the Bow River pathway into a flowing corridor of creativity. Connecting Calgary’s cultural landmarks and natural landscapes\, these activations merge art\, nature\, and community through installation\, performance\, and interactive projects. It invites audiences to experience the city through the rhythm of the river and the energy of downtown life. \n \nPresented by The New Gallery and supported by RISEUp Calgary\, Current runs through July 6 – 30th\, 2026. \nCurrent brings together the works and creative processes of Calgary artists through installation\, performance and socially engaged practice. At times ecological\, social and deeply rooted in process\, Current invites artists to slow down and work directly within the liminal space of the river’s edge\, the histories it holds\, its riparian habitat\, transition to the urban environment\, and the material relations both carried and deposited. \n \nArtist participation is site-specific\, and interventions are simultaneously temporary\, time-based and socially engaged. Current merges an outdoor exhibition program with musical and movement-based performance\, installation\, sound\, participatory workshops and facilitated interdisciplinary tours.

SUMMARY:Songsmith Sundays with Carter Felker
DESCRIPTION:Every week\, country-folk singer-songwriter Carter Felker presents a chill weekend set with a rotating cast of guests. \nThis family-friendly show is best paired with our delicious Sunday brunch! \nBrunch menu: https://kingeddy.ca/menu \nAbout Carter Felker: \nBorn and raised in the Prairies\, Carter Felker’s eyes have seen the length of the wheat fields through many winter mornings\, and the stretch of the sun through many short-lived summers. He has laboured\, he has lost\, and he has loved. Carter uses his own experience\, and his desire to tell a story to create honest\, human-made\, country music. \n“Carter Felker traffics in music\, yes\, but even more profoundly in essence: the humdrum essence of Monday morning alarms clocks coming round again during lifetimes ticking on through thoughtless dawn moments walking across the kitchen floor; the craven essence of sneaking wordlessly away from a relationship and feeling the mute screen door sag shut behind you; the essence of everyday struggles.” – MLW \n— \nMusic starts at 11:30 amNo cover
