SUMMARY:OHSOTO’KINO: Indigenous Peoples Day at Studio Bell
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with free admission at Studio Bell\, home of the National Music Centre. \nThe day will feature live performances from award-winning throat-singing duo Tudjaat from Nunavut\, a DJ set by sean beaver\, and more acts to be announced. \nVisitors can also explore the annually updated Speak Up! exhibit\, showcasing the stories of five newly added Indigenous musicians\, and a vendor market on the main floor with local Indigenous artisans. Indigenous Peoples Day is presented as part of NMC’s OHSOTO’KINO initiative. \n— \n10 am to 5 pm \nAdmission to Studio Bell is free for everyone on June 21. \n— \nAbout Tudjaat: \nTudjaat are Madeleine Allakariallak and Phoebe Atagotaaluk\, two Inuit women from Nunavut\, Canada who are keeping the ancient tradition of Inuit throat singing alive. Tudjaat got its start when Madelaine\, who performed as part of a backup chorus with Susan Aglukark’s third album\, was noticed by its producer\, Randall Prescott. When he learned that she had a cousin who was also a throat singer\, he arranged to have them brought together for a recording session which combined their traditional singing and modern music. The project featured “Kajusita (When My Ship Comes In)\,” a song which won its producer the 1997 American Indian Film Institute Awards Best Song award\, was included on a United Nations compilation CD\, and was made into a music video. The song\, which describes the forced exile of a group of Inuit to the High Arctic in the last century\, is a painful and poignant tribute to those who suffered and died as a consequence of a questionable government decision. \nAbout sean beaver: \nsean beaver is a multi-award-winning Indigenous techno/electronic artist based in Calgary\, Alberta\, originally from Driftpile Cree Nation in Treaty 8 Territory\, and is currently nominated for two YYC Music Awards: Indigenous Artist of the Year and World/Cultural Recording of the Year. Known for his high-energy hybrid performances that blend live looping\, original electronic production\, Pow Wow elements\, percussion\, and vocal chants\, his sound has been compared to a fusion of The Chemical Brothers and Richie Hawtin. Deeply connected to his Indigenous heritage and sober since 2006\, sean was also a founding member of the pioneering Indigenous hip-hop group REDDNATION from 2002–2013 before returning to his electronic roots as a solo artist. Since then\, he has independently released several albums\, including his 2024 release The Temperance. A self-taught producer and performer with a background in radio broadcasting\, sean combines years of experimentation\, technical skill\, and creative evolution into his music and live shows. His latest single\, “I’m Ok\,” is out now. \nAbout OHSOTO’KINO: \nOHSOTO’KINO is a Blackfoot phrase meaning ‘to recognize a voice of.’ This Indigenous programming initiative focuses on three elements: creation of new music in NMC’s recording studios\, artist development through a music incubator program\, and exhibitions via the annually updated Speak Up! gallery. With support from TD\, NMC is creating more opportunities for Indigenous artists to produce new music and develop their skills\, and continuing to amplify the stories of Indigenous musicians and their contributions to Canadian culture. NMC’s National Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee leads the direction of the initiative designed to forge stronger bridges of understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. \nAbout Speak Up! \nWith the support of TD Bank Group\, the award-winning Speak Up! exhibit showcases trailblazing Indigenous artists who have made a lasting impact on culture through music. Through storytelling\, immersive audio\, and personal artifacts\, Speak Up! invites visitors to explore how these artists are using their voices to spark dialogue\, inspire change\, and share what it means to be First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit in Canada. Stay tuned for the latest additions for 2026. \n— \nNational Indigenous Peoples Day at Studio Bell is made possible with support from TD and the City of Calgary. \nLearn more: studiobell.ca/whats-on

The walk starts at Harry Hays Building (220 4 Ave SE) and concludes at The Confluence (750 9th Ave SE).The Walk for Reconciliation is a day to reflect on the difficult history of this land and honour the survivors\, and the children who never returned home. It’s a day to recognize the inter-generational impacts of residential schools on individuals\, families\, and communities. Held on National Indigenous Peoples Day\, it is also a celebration of the vibrant and lively Indigenous communities and cultures that still exist today. \n\nEvent Details:8:30 am: Gathering at Harry Hays Building | 220 4 Ave SE9 am: Start walk at Harry Hays Building | 220 4 Ave SE10 am: Walk ends at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland | 750 9th Ave SEA free community meal and coffee courtesy of Tim Hortons East Village will be available for the first 500 participants.10:15 am: Outdoor gathering with speeches\, truth telling from residential school survivors\, and performances by drummers and dancers.11 am – 1 pm: Community programming\, including learnings from a Treaty 7 Elder\, Indigenous games\, free admission to The Confluence Cultural Centre and activations at Calgary’s oldest building\, Hunt House. \nThank you to our partners for supporting this event and making this gathering possible: Trellis Society\, Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary\, and Bow Valley College. Thank you to The City of Calgary at the Team at Tim Hortons East Village for supporting the walk. Why We WalkFrom 1883 to 1996\, upwards of 150\,000 children were put through the federal residential school system in Canada. First Nations\, Métis and Inuit children were removed from their homes and families and underwent a violent removal of their identities and culture.Children who attended these schools were subjected to all forms of abuse\, and there were many children who never returned home. As determined by the Canadian House of Commons in October 2022\, these church-run and federally funded schools were an attempted genocide of Indigenous Peoples to gain control of land and resources. On June 11\, 2008\, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered a full apology on behalf of Canadians for the Indian Residential School System. After decades of this violence and loss being minimized\, unacknowledged or outright denied\, this apology was a monumental step towards truth. The Walk for Reconciliation is a day to reflect on the difficult history of this land and honour the survivors\, and the children who never returned home. It’s a day to recognize the inter-generational impacts of residential schools on individuals\, families\, and communities. Held on National Indigenous Peoples Day\, it is also a celebration of the vibrant and lively Indigenous communities and cultures that still exist today.

DESCRIPTION:Spirit Hotel \nDetermined to wake the dead by any means necessary\, Spirit Hotel deals in whiskey-dipped tape rock and haunted house fuzz\, all under the direction of singer-songwriter Nataanii Cornelius. Their 2024 debut Wear Your Death was a countrygaze knife twist on their listeners\, and the new direction only drives it deeper\, as it gets louder.\n\nHeavydiveNeo-wave/shoegaze trio Heavydive blends shimmering guitar haze and spectral vocals into lucid-dream pop. Demonstrated through their 2024 LP Foreign Patterns\, festival appearances\, and notable shows alongside groups like Earthless and The Messthetics\, they craft immersive\, fast-paced anthems for fans of dark\, cinematic\, melancholy music charged by a mythical modern narrative.\nRroachHFeaturing calculated tones\, catchy riffs\, and lyrics inspired by mental health struggles\, queer relationships\, and… being a bit of a dirtbag\, RroachH is a queer- and femme-fronted\, alternative rock group who describe their sound as “multifarious.” The four-piece draws influences from power-pop\, emo and psych\, and have shared the stage with PUP\, Speedy Ortiz and Bif Naked.\nInnerouterHeavy and melancholic\, Innerouter’s dream grunge is a nostalgic trip to the ‘90s. Blending the floatiness of shoegaze and the chunkiness of grunge\, the groups dynamic sound features dual male/female vocals that weave hauntingly beautiful melodies on top of dissonant chords and rolling riffs.\nImportant info:\nStart and running times are subject to change. SUMMARY:Sled Island and Rockin’ 4 Dollar$ present: NIFE FITE\, Dual Nature and more
DESCRIPTION:NIFE FITELoud\, bad\, and bleeding\, NIFE FITE is a new\, yet recognizable art-punk trio consisting of Matthew Springer (Radioactive Vampire Teeth\, Dial Up)\, E. Collins (Thee Canadian Dispatch) and Kaiden Jackman (The Furnace). Satirizing violence in the media\, the group plows through bite sized tunes about knives\, stabbings\, and childhood games with reckless abandon. \nDual NatureDrawing inspiration from the ceaseless sonic brutality of noise rock acts such as The Jesus Lizard\, Pissed Jeans and Unwound\, Dual Nature utilizes pummeling drums\, piercing guitars\, gritty\, muscular bass\, and manic\, snarling vocals to create a violently cathartic synthesis of despair and rage.\nMean Bikini“Pointed\, unapologetic\, viciously fun\, and punishingly aggressive” are all ways that Mean Bikini has been described. Riding the line between hardcore and skate punk with a twist of queer rage and just the right amount of catchiness\, the four-piece has been made notorious for not only their music\, but their inclusive and energetic live performances.\nToxic FemPowered by bold vocals\, thrashy guitars and punchy hooks\, Toxic Fem channels in-your-face feminist punk with community at its core. With nods to Bikini Kill\, Fugazi\, The Distillers and more\, the four-piece mix riot grrrl ferocity into an urgent grungegaze showcase on their debut EP Toxic Fem Just Won’t Shut Up!\nImportant info:\nStart and running times are subject to change. SUMMARY:Sled Island and Eighty-Eight present: Thee Soreheads\, Brain Bent\, Weep Wave and more
DESCRIPTION:Thee SoreheadsBold\, female-fronted punk band Thee Soreheads blend raw power\, biting hooks\, and multilingual grit. Switching between English and Spanish\, their sound channels classic punk urgency with a modern edge. Releasing demos\, a live session\, and now their debut EP\, they showcase tightly crafted tracks that explore anger\, identity\, and resilience.Brain BentSince debuting in 2020\, Brain Bent has established itself as Calgary’s most reliably menacing synth-punk act. Their sound ranges from devolved egg-punk ditties to furious blasts of hardcore (as heard on their 2025 release\, “No Signal”) with darkly sardonic\, at times hilarious lyrics. Stretch before seeing their show; you WILL be moving\, non-stop. \nWeep Wave \nOpening for Jack White\, recording a KEXP session\, a first international tour in Japan\, and being tour support for Fat Dog were just part of Weep Wave’s last year. At a new chapter of their journey\, the band is back with a kaleidoscopic record called Speck\, which ventures from churning post-punk to electro dance.\n\nRyan Bourne & the Plant City BandFor over a decade\, Calgary psych-pop wizard Ryan Bourne has lent his singular touch to projects like Ghostkeeper\, Sleepkit and Chad VanGaalen. On 2023’s Plant City\, Bourne recruited VanGaalen and Chris Dadge to co-produce a strutting garage pop odyssey. The five-piece Plant City Band brings this dream to hazy\, dazzling life.\nknittingWith evocative storytelling and a dry sense of humour\, knitting makes guitar driven\, lyrically introspective indie rock evoking the nostalgia of ‘90s alternative. Their debut album Some Kind of Heaven was released in September 2024 to international critical acclaim\, leading to tours across North America\, Europe and the UK. Their second full-length album is expected in June 2026.\nFionavairCharacterized by soft vocals and loud guitars\, Montreal’s Fionavair draws inspiration from cold winters\, lust\, and bears. The indie four-piece blends elements of post rock\, shoegaze\, grunge\, dream pop and more into a delicious little cocktail\, and you can’t have just one. Check out their latest track “Neighbours” for a taste of what to expect.\nBETABOYSEver since 2016\, BETABOYS has been celebrating ‘80s new wave and synth-pop music with infectiously party-ready energy. Their first full-length album\, Great Pretenders\, dropped last December and received regular radio airplay across Alberta. These dudes have a message of diversity\, inclusion\, and hope for a world where we’re all slow dancing to synthesizers.\n\nImportant info:\nStart and running times are subject to change. SUMMARY:Sled Island presents: Black Country\, New Road\, Chrome Harvest and Eye of Newt
DESCRIPTION:Black Country\, New RoadEmerging from London’s genre-bending “Windmill” scene in 2018\, Black Country\, New Road are a band of true originals\, constantly shape-shifting and re-defining the boundaries of art rock on their own terms.  \nBCNR originally featured a lineup that included Isaac Wood\, Tyler Hyde\, May Kershaw\, Georgia Ellery\, Lewis Evans\, and Charlie Wayne\, adding Luke Mark shortly after the release of their math-y debut single “Athens\, France.” Their first album\, 2021’s For the First Time\, further solidified the group’s commitment to genre agnosticism\, blending post-punk swagger with elements of free jazz and klezmer. The record was nominated for the Mercury Prize\, and was included in the Best Albums of 2021 lists for NME and The Guardian.\nAlmost one year to the day after their first album’s release and led off by four eclectic singles\, ‘22’s Ants From Up There reached number three on the United Kingdom Albums Chart and added shades of chamber pop and indie rock to the sonic quilt. Shortly before this album’s release\, lead singer Isaac Wood announced his departure\, leaving the remaining six members to re-define BCNR’s sound.  \nChange can be an opportunity\, and the group rose to the occasion. The 2023 live album Live at Bush Hall chronicled the rebirth of a band\, a rousing collection of entirely new compositions created since Wood’s departure that debuted a layered\, multi-vocalist approach. This was followed by 2025’s Forever Howlong\, a pastoral odyssey of folk rock hooks\, prog-y digressions\, and twee instrumentation that the band later showcased on an international tour packed with memorable live showings. \nIt’s a new\, exciting era for Black Country\, New Road. Celebrate the next chapter with all of us here at Sled Island.\n\nChrome Harvest\nDense\, textured and full of heart\, Chrome Harvest is constantly pushing boundaries\, weaving together indie rock\, experimental textures\, and lush arrangements to create songs that are personal\, introspective and raw. Their latest self-titled album is their most vulnerable yet\, exploring themes of self-identity\, honesty\, and the struggle to carve out space in the world.\nEye of Newt\nThis is overthought music about overthinking. Eye of Newt — the arty pop project of Calgary-based multi-instrumentalist Nate Waters — relies on shameless songcraft butting up against insistently obtuse compositional quirks. The songs swing wildly from tightly wound art rock to quasi-improvised harsh noise to meticulous pop with starkly humorous lyrics.\n\nImportant info:\nStart and running times are subject to change. Please check the Sled Island schedule in June for exact set times.Upon entering a festival venue\, the passholder agrees to being photographed\, filmed or recorded in that venue\, and agrees to the publication\, reproduction\, distribution and broadcast of all photographs\, video or other recordings of the passholder’s voice or likeness without further notice or compensation in any publicity\, advertisement or other publication carried-out by\, or on behalf of\, Sled Island and in perpetuity in any manner and media whatsoever\, including print\, broadcast or internet.\nEveryone has the right to feel safe and included at Sled Island.
